Psoriasis

Psoriasis is considered genetically determined and consists of reddish lesions that have characteristic silvery scaling. The lesions may come and go but generally are chronic. Although it has a base as genetically determined, it is also believed that nutritional, stress and psychological factors play a large role.

Quite often it does not affect a person’s good health unless it is associated with arthritis, but psoriasis sufferers often feel “disfigured” and it may lead to social isolation and depression. In treating psoriasis, stress and nutritional management is crucial and will ideally be part of the patient’s reevaluation of his or her lifestyle, personal goals and vision.

Although psoriasis tends to be hereditary, quite often it is the lifestyle that is hereditary, and it is more common in smokers and heavy alcohol drinkers. Psoriasis can start at any age, but most frequently in the late twenties to thirties.

Psoriasis attacks may start with a bacterial throat infection or may follow a stressful event. It may start out slow, varying from one or two lesions to a source of annoyance to a physically disabling affliction. It may take a typical course of remission and recurrence. The characteristic plaques are sharply demarcated, usually not itchy, red and raised and are covered with silvery scales that easily bleed. If left along these lesions will heal without leaving scar tissue or affecting hair growth, but it is not uncommon for sufferers to become stressed during an outbreak, and itch the lesions until they bleed, causing and spreading the infection.

Psoriasis may be associated with severe arthritis, which is much like rheumatoid arthritis. It is not contagious and is classified as a common skin problem. In normal skin, the time necessary for an epidermal cell to go from creation to shedding or scaling is about 28 days, psoriatic cells complete the process in three or four days, creating inadequate maturation and finally plaque formation from the affected cells. It is unknown why the cells form nine times quicker than average cell maturation time, but lifestyle, nutrition, injury, stress and climate may be important factors.

In treating psoriasis with herbal medicine, it is important to treat holistically, taking into account a person’s lifestyle, nutrition, stress and genetics. Just as lifestyles vary, herbal remedies for individuals will vary, but treating for stress and nutrition remains consistent with all psoriasis sufferers.

For topical application, Anti- Psoriasis cream (60 ml. $6.99) helps to reduce the itching and inflammation of psoriasis. It has a base of Avocado Oil which has proven beneficial to psoriasis sufferers.

It is important for psoriasis sufferers focus on alteratives to help alleviate occurrence of lesions. There are two teas that have proven beneficial for sufferers: Psoriasis Tea, (50 tea bags $29.99) which contains blue flag, yellow dock, cleavers and skullcap, (which is also available as a tincture 15 ml. $12.99 or capsules 100 $19.00) and Arthritis #5 Tea (12 bags $22.99) or capsules (100 19.00) which has shown to be reduce the effects and occurrence of psoriasis associated with rheumatoid arthritis when used over an extended period of time.

Stress management is crucial for psoriasis sufferers. They must address your stress level, and work to reducing it. That sometimes is the source of stress itself, so assisting the body in relaxing helps to focus on other areas of your life. Good Health Tea (12 bags $22.99) will help promote calmness while reducing anxiety and stress. A nice warm bath at the end of the day with five drops of LBB essential oil in your bath will also help to reduce your stress.

Nutrition plays a large role in psoriasis. It is important to maintain a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, reducing or eliminating organ meat, such as liver. Increasing your zinc (pumpkin seed capsules $19.00) calcium, magnesium and Vitamin D (high-cal tea or capsules) intake has also shown to be effective.
